In a sport that is all about dollars and sense, Boxing baffles me with many business decisions that are made and obviously NOT made.
Boxing, like all professional sports today, is a business – where and how can we make the bigger amount of monetary units.
Seeing upwards of 1.5 million viewers on HBO, whom also heard the unified champion agree that a rematch is warranted, the “First Lady” seems reluctant to stand within arms reach with Kali Reis again. Is Reis too much of a threat after she put Brækhus on her ass and nearly a second time in their May championship bout?
Negotiations were supposedly ongoing for another fan-favorite matchup with long-time favorite Layla McCarter for September 15th.
After weeks of talks, McCarter just tweets: “Brækhus team won’t fight me. Sep 15th or ever! The excuse: no budget for our fight. I offered to make it cheap! GGG/CANELO show and no $$? Something stinks like yesterday’s garbage. #paperchamp #stepup #letsdothis #bigshow #nomoreexcuses”
Say what??? No money?!
Your goal is American Riches by exploiting the American fighters and fans?
The matchups that will sell are in front of Team Brækhus. The public has already proven one of them!
This morning, I woke to reading contradicting reports: (1) Brækhus vs Aleksandra Magdziak Lopes on September 15th (was listed on Boxrec.com as well, but later shot down by numerous media contacting Lopes regarding the fight) and (2) Norwegian press citing that she has withdrawn from the show since agreements could not be met with potential opponents and now the show is within one month’s time.
Brækhus went on to say, “Instead, I am working on a new fight for the fall in New York, where I have the opportunity to be completely fresh and ready.”
The P4P Queen then states that that her team is working with HBO on a potential November/December date.
“If it will be in December, it will probably be in Madison Square Garden,” says Brækhus.
Now, here is another sketchy hitch to the conversation that makes little sense…
Her statement included, “… hope to meet (Amanda) Serrano” as a top opponent candidate. Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm… How will any of the sanctioning bodies even sanction the matchup with an opponent that has NEVER fight in that weight division? Ohhhhh Wait! We are talking about women’s boxing! How could I have forgotten! Sanctioning bodies give their kings and queens whatever they desire! I am sure Jordan Maldanado (Serranos’ Manager and Cindy’s husband, the real voice behind any of the Serrano sisters’ social media accounts) will eat this up!
Let’s not forget that Brækhus stated that a matchup with UFC’s Cyborg was a desire. With the UFC star’s contract due to expire soon, are we set to be seeing more drama in the ranks?
Nonetheless, September 15th will NOT feature the queen of the sport and you have to question all behind it:
Where is the money? What money are we talking about? What purse values were being offered?
Who has priced themselves out of the market? Opponents? Or, Brækhus?
Who is scared of whom?
Why do the sanctioning bodies even have rankings and mandatory opponents, if they will accept almost any opponent?
Are the boxers being loyal to their craft?
What are the last career motives of the soon-to-be 37 year old unified Welterweight Champion?
How good is her word?
