After word was out on Saturday’s Layla McCarter vs. Victoria Cisneros championship matchup, Global Boxing Union (GBU) and Women’s International Boxing Federation (WIBF) came under fire for the announcement of the above matchup being for the vacant world titles.
In early February WomenofBoxing.com was contacted by David Boskovic, manager of German Verena Kaiser (10-0, 5 KOs), whom collected those title belts in September with a strong Unanimous Decision triumph over Diana Garcia of Dominican Republic.
So, how could McCarter and Cisneros be competing for the the championship belts that Kaiser won merely a few months prior? There was no rules and regulations violations that would have warranted Kaiser to be stripped.
For whatever reason, GBU President Juergen Lutz justified the fight between McCarter and Cisneros on March 3rd to be for the interim World Welterweight titles of the GBU and the WIBF as well as be considered as an eliminator to face Kaiser for the regular championship belts.
Kaiser’s team is pleased with the ultimate decision and clarification and welcome the challenge.
When asked about possible promoters and/or locations for the potential matchup, Boskovic stated, “US Debut would be great. We are working on something. It will be published this week.”
That news seems to be making it’s way out, since Boxrec lists Kaiser’s next matchup to be set for April 21st in Sweden against multi-time world champion Mikaela Lauren. It is too early to know if any titles will be on the line, but the bout is listed as a 10-Rounder.
Is the spirit of a highly prosperous 2018, these matchup and potential matchups are paving the way for a growing future in women’s boxing.
Good luck to all!
