In the Battle of Unbeaten Middleweights at the Convention Center in Mineapolis, NM on Saturday evening, Duluth, MN native Amy Lemenager (2-0, 1 KO) dealt an early knockdown off of a solid right to the head of Leslie Pope (4-1, 3 KOs) that proved the clincher in a Split Decision victory.
Just like her nickname projects, “the Little Bull” Pope came right out of her corner as the aggressor from the opening bell, pushing Lemenager to backstep and fight off of counters.
“Hard Hands” Lemenager landed a thumping right on the face of Pope and followed with another clipping right that put the Kansas City based Pope to her knees for the knockdown only 30 seconds into the 4 Round matchup.
The more polished Pope was persistent in pushing forward for the 4 Rounds, keeping the action exciting while neutralizing the early knockdown to keep it close as Lemenager continued to lay the hard hands on.
Official Scores: 38-37, 37-38, 38-37
One of my boxing media associates, Jesse Kelley of MNFightNews.com, stated that Lemenager “looked improved from her pro debut”.
Tony Grygelko, Owner of Tony G Presents, cited that Lemenager “has real upside but she still has a natural learning curve ahead of her.”
Grygelko continued, “I applaud Amy for fighting a very durable 4-0 opponent. Amy embraces where she is skill-wise and knows that she needs to learn and develop. I will say this: two years from now, Amy Lemenager will be very dangerous for any fighter out there!”
The pool of Middleweights is not very large. I can see Lemenager in with seasoned veterans Erin Toughill or Ashleigh Curry soon for further tests towards a title shot in the future.
