While Unified Welterweight Champion Cecilia Brækhus is out playing the media circus to see where the biggest buck lies, mandatory opponent, future hall of famer, and money packed Mayweather Promotions’ fighter Layla McCarter is staying active.
An uncommon stage for women’s boxing world championships will host the WIBF and GBU Welterweight title matchup of McCarter (40-13-5, 10 KOs) and Victoria Cisneros (13-19-2, 6 KOs) on March 3rd. Left Hook Promotions is presenting the show at the Sky Ute Casino in Ignacio, Colorado.
Having signed with Mayweather Promotions in February of last year, McCarter has only made one of their show’s slots, a 7th Round TKO victory over Szilvia Szabados in April. Since then, she has had to travel south of the border to earn a keep busy Unanimous Decision win over Erika Hernandez during the holidays. On March 3rd, the 38 year old will look at add two more minor titles to her resume with hopes that the highly demanded matchup with Brækhus comes to fruition soon.
Cisneros has struggled in the last few years, only collecting a couple wins over much less experienced but her resume of opponents is no reason to disregard her. Opposition includes: Brækhus, Holly Holm,Chelle Hallback, Melissa Hernandez, Mikaela Lauren, Tori Nelson, Kali Reis and more.
Hardly conceivable to classify as a “rematch”, the two have faced each other much earlier in their respective careers, a 6-Round Unanimous Decision edge for McCarter in 2006, also at the same venue as this upcoming showdown.
Also on the card will be the Featherweight 4-Rounder of Alma Garcia (2-5, 1 KO) of Denver vs. Katie Ramirez (0-2-1) of New Mexico.
With “Money” Mayweather backing McCarter and the potential for a high profile matchup of top tier women in boxing, when is Mayweather Promotions going to truly invest into their athletes?
