With the WBC Super Middleweight Champion, Claressa Shields, to drop to Middleweight in the coming months to challenge champion and fellow Salita Promotions stablemate Christina Hammer, the weight division will be up for grabs.
In advance of that move, the WBC is sanctioning Golden Boy Promotions’ Maricelo “La Diva” Cornejo (12-2, 5 KOs) and Franchon “The Heavy Hitting Diva” Crews-Dezurn (3-1, 1 KO) for the Interim Super Middleweight belt during the GGG/Canelo Megafight Fight Week festivities in Las Vegas.
The two contenders are scheduled to enter the Golden Boy ring at the Joint inside the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas on Thursday, September 13th as a support bout to Pablo Cesar Cano vs. Ruslan Madiev Main Event.
Cornejo will challenge for the coveted Green and Gold belt for the second time, having come up a little short against Kali Reis in April, 2016 for the Middleweight World Championship.
Cornejo will be fired up for this one as she looks to continue her latest path of destruction that includes knockout wins over Lisa Garland, Claudia Ramirez, and recently over prospect Samantha Pill.
Crews-Dezurn has only been professional for under two years, but winning is in her blood.
Before turning professional ranks in the toughest debut one could conceive of (a debut showcase between Crews and 2-time Gold Olympic Gold Medalist and now undefeated multiple champion Claressa Shields), Crews-Dezurn was an eight-time national amateur champion.
Golden Boy has created a golden matchup with Diva force!
This show, in part, will be televised on ESPN. It is not yet clear if this WBC CHampionship will be part of the broadcast, streamed on ESPN3, ESPN+, or ESPN: the Ocho.
