Saturday Night, WIBA International Featherweight Champion Carla “Starr” Torres makes her return to the ring, but on the fly-in opponent side of Warriors Boxing’s Windy City Fight Night at the UIC Pavilion in Chicago.
Torres received the offer and jumped right on the opportunity with only a week’s notice.
“I have been training everyday. I am always in shape and always ready and waiting for a fight.” stated Torres as she awaited the weighin. “I am good to go.”
Torres is a huge threat for anyone, veteran or up-and-comer. The 5-3 record should not make one drool at an easy win. Half of her matches are against championship caliber opposition. All but one bout was against opponents with winning records. All but one matchup was away from her native Puerto Rico and current home in Ohio. Hitting the road and winning is normal for Torres.
Torres’s history includes…
Facing #3 in the World and current WBC Silver Featherweight Champ Ronica Jeffrey, splitting the two-fight rivalry – a decision defeat in 2011 but reversed the fate in 2014 with her own decision win (for the WIBA World Championship) while providing Jeffrey her only loss thus far in her career.
Feeling mighty, she took a challenge from the popular World #1 Super Featherweight Amanda Serrano in November of that year. Unfortunately, that bout did not go as planned and showed that power of Serrano.
Vowing to not be deterred from the loss, Torres stayed resilient to the her craft and claimed the WIBA International title from the grasp of a tough Olivia Gerula (world ranked #6) in a surprising upset in Gerula’s backyard just over a year ago.
Torres has played the spoiler before. Look for her to be focused and primed for victory in her quest for another world title.
