The consensus Pound for Pound #1 Female and Undisputed Welterweight World Champion Cecilia Brækhus (32-0, 9 KOs) of Norway has been in Los Angeles, CA for training camp since the beginning of the month.

There was talks for her to join the Gennady Golovkin versus Saul “Canelo” Alvares, then whomever/[insert name here], now named Vanes Martirosyan.

Boxrec has now listed the potential matchup and twitter started tweeting persistently of “Fight Announcement Coming!!!”

Seeing Brækhus with GGG with press on April 13th makes it all so real that in just over two weeks, she will be making her seconds trip to the ring on US soil in her careers, the first being way early in her career – in 2008 as a 7-0 prospect stepping in with a 4-2 Nicole Woods in Hollywood, FL.

Days ago, “First Lady” Brækhus brought in legendary Lucia Rijker into camp as “Coach”, so something huge must be brewing in a coming announcement.

Could it be the IBF mandatory opponent and US favorite, “Amazing” Layla McCarter (41-13-5, 11 KOs) that is set to square off with the top female in boxing? Something tells me “No!” since Mayweather Promotions’ boxer McCarter and her team has been partaking in Twitter discussion on Showtime TV logistics and why the matchup has now happened, not to mention that the May 5th show is an HBO televised broadcast..

Brækhus has been seeking out the major crossover matchup with UFC superstar Cris “Cyborg” Santos, but that may not seem that logical with her UFC championship match last month and the tones of Tweets as well as Dana White’s silence on the topic. But then again… White has a lot on his plate with the McGregor fiasco in Brooklyn a couple weeks ago.

Looking at the upcoming schedule of fights in Welterweight, Super Lightweight, and Super Welterweight divisions, that does not leave many options for US-based boxers.

One name keeps jumping out at me, especially since she insists on earning a rematch with the champ. That individual would be Sweden’s Klara Svensson (18-2, 6 KOs) and holds a high ranking within the Welterweight division with no match scheduled. In February of last year, Brækhus defeated Svensson by a landslide decision.

[UPDATE] Today (Thursday, April 19), another top athlete has just requested a rematch with Brækhus… Argentina’s favorite and #1 Super Lightweight in the world Erica Farias (25-2, 10 KOs) requested the shot before she retires from the sport. Farias challenged Brækhus in 2017 as well unsuccessfully, a victim of another strong Unanimous Decision separation.

[RUMOR MILL] This evening (Thursday, April 19), rumors started swirling that Brækhus could be facing former WBC Middleweight champion Kali Reis (13-6-1, 4 KOs) of Rhode Island.

I have been perusing the ranking of the divisions and scratching more names off the list than expected. Nonetheless, the announcement is coming and possibly within the next day or two as to who the opponent may be.

With just over two weeks until the championship megashow, can the Brækhus US invasion hit the hype that is desired? The buzz of the show has lacked, but mostly because of the “Canelo” Alvarez drama that threatened the show.
