“Scouser Scourge!” Zarika again defeats Phiri to retain WBC title
World Boxing Council super bantamweight champion Fatuma Zarika retained her title by defeating Catherine Phiri of Zambia in a close fight at the Kenyatta International Convention Center in Nairobi.
Both fighters were landing hard punches, however, Zarika’s blows were more effective. The Kenyan won the title by dethroning Alicia Ashley of Jamaica on October 1, 2016, with a convincing victory in New York.
This was the third time that the Kenyan boxer defended her title after defeating Phiri for the first time and then Mexican Yamileth Mercado last year. Zarika has become a veritable “Scouser scourge,” training in Liverpool, England, during the last months, guided by Declan O’Rourke, with whom she has shown a lot of technical improvement.
