Star in the Making
In the sport of boxing there is always a new fighter entering a gym looking to realize a long standing dream of becoming a professional fighter. For female amateur Melissa Wurster this definitely rings true. After competing in other sports on the collegiate level, Melissa found herself looking for her next challenge as her sports career as she knew it had come to an end. Luckily for the trainers at American Top Team in Indianapolis she stumbled right into their doors.
Wurster who had no boxing background was intrigued with the discipline and work ethic of the sweet science and began training with American Top Team head trainer Kenny Walker. Since entering the gym just over six months ago the young pupil has been hard at work learning the craft of boxing and bettering her skills daily. Although she is a tall and blonde do not let the looks fool you this young lady can fight. I asked Kenny what was the first thing he noticed in his newest project and here are his thoughts on Wurster.
“Wow what can I say since day one she has been hard at work like a sponge in the gym taking in everything that was said or shown to her. She posses natural power and that was probably the main thing I noticed as she had no boxing background. She is a model student and always hungry to work. I have seen her give some guys issues in the ring when sparring which surprised some but not me after working with her. She is a fierce competitor and also very humble.”
Melissa entered into the Sugar Bert qualifying tourney a couple months ago, and to no surprise she was successful in the qualifier propelling her into the Sugar Bert National Tourney which was held last month in Kissimmee, FL. Despite her lack of experience Wurster once again showed her talent and power on a national stage as she won her match by second round tko. The tourney had over 2,000 competitors from across the nation making this a huge event. We sat down with Wurster to ask about the win and how her career is going.
“Thanks theringside.biz for taking time to come and see me at the gym. The tournament was a great learning experience for me. I saw girls of all ages with some serious skill making the experience that much better. I felt great capturing my first TKO win that was really cool. In Indy it is hard to find sparring so it was great to be able to mix it up with girls from all over the country. I had to fight at 165 as there was no one at my weight of 152 which made my match that much more interesting. I enjoyed being on the big stage and look forward to continuing to better myself each and everyday. I want to thank my team for the experience it was awesome training down in Florida at the Cory Spinks gym, got a chance to meet some really good people. Some have asked when I may be turning pro but I feel I have a few more strides to make before that happens. When my team says I am ready we will make that jump. I want to thank all my fans for their continued support I cannot say thanks enough for the positive encouragement.”
We enjoyed speaking with Melissa and for those of you who are fans of female boxing she is definitely a talent to keep an eye on. We will continue to cover her as she makes her rise and crosses into the pro ranks.
