From WBA:
Plata Wins Interim Title From Torres
By: Kid Hersh
Jessica Nery Plata scored a split decision victory over Silvia Torres at Como Sindicato de Trabajadores IMSS in Tlalpan, Mexico, to win the World Boxing Association (WBA) Interim World Female Light Flyweight Title. The scorecards read 98-93 Plata, 96-94 Plata, and 97-94 Torres at the end of ten rounds.
Plata moved her record to 22-2 with her victory, handing Torres the first defeat of her career in her 20th professional fight. The challenger was very confident heading into the fight, stating that she knew Torres well from their four fights in the amateurs but that she has vastly improved since that time.
Plata was emotional about the victory as she dedicated the fight to her recently deceased mother, saying “I have many mixed feelings, this belt is in memory of my mom, who left me just a few months ago.”
Both fighters agreed that perhaps a rematch is in order seeing as how the fight itself was a very good one from opening to closing bell. Torres thought that she deserved the victory but was happy that the fans enjoyed their back and forth war, saying: “It was another exciting fight for the public, the judge’s scores do not necessarily reflect what happened in the ring, but I will be back and be looking for a sixth fight with Jessica.”
All eyes are now turning to Yesica Bopp, the longtime WBA World Female Light Flyweight Title holder, who just won her title defense via sixth round stoppage earlier this month as Bopp vs the newly crowned Interim Champion Plata would likely be a very exciting matchup.
