From Madison Square Garden in New York, Ireland’s Katie Taylor (14-0, 6 KOs) became the 3rd undisputed champion in womens boxing after getting the judges scoring edge over Belgium’s Delfine Persoon (43-2, 18 KOs) in their Lightweight matchup in front of a huge crowd.
Taylor was bloodied up by clashes of heads and furthered the bleeding with eating more leather than she is used to, by facing the taller and awkward Persoon over 10 Rounds.
Like many of my counterparts, Persoon seemed to have persevered over the welts and cut to her face to tire and outwork Taylor for a perceived 6-4 edge.
Official scores: 95-95, 96-94, 96-94
Taylor adds the WBC and Ring Magazine belt to her WBA, WBO, and IBF Lightweight belts by Majority Decision.
In a fight that female boxing needed, it shows that Taylor is human and not invincible while proving that she is a fan-favorite world-wide. That crowd was electric.
This matchup also shows that a rivalry may have been created. Rematch! Trilogy! Persoon deserves the right at her titles before Taylor moves on for this so-called bigger fights.
