Unbeaten junior lightweight Mikaela Mayer got off to a rough start but turned it around to dismantle Yareli Larios Friday evening in an eight-round unanimous decision at Grand Casino in Hinckley, Minnesota.
As soon as Mayer (10-0, 4 KO’s) utilized her jab, Larios was no match for her, as she was consistently was beat to the punch.
After getting outclassed and rocked by a combination late, Larios resorted to taunting, but Mayer took control of the inside, landing combinations to the body.
The judges scored the bout 79-73, 78-74, and 80-72 — all for Mayer, who has outpointed her last three opponents.
“It’s more about strategy in the pros,” Mayer said. “I was relaxed and took my time in there. We knew she was going to be tough.
“It’s been a great year and a half as a pro. I’ve fought 10 times and want to continue staying active and improving.”
The bout was on the undercard of the secondary middleweight world title fight between Rob Brant and Khasan Baysangurov.
