Ring Magazine’s November 2016 Issue contained a Womens Boxing Feature by Thomas Gerbasi where he names five Best vs. Best potential matchups, but he missed a huge one that is starting talks of hopeful fruition.
Former Title Contender Alexander Petkovic’s Petko’s LMS Boxpromotion has scheduled WBO Middleweight Christina Hammer (19-0, 9 KOs) to be a prime feature for their show on November 5th in Munich, Bayern, Germany.
Their requested opponent was publicized via the WBO website as WBC Middleweight Champion American Kali Reis (10-5-1, 4 KOs).
Reis has already done damage to Hammer, being the first and technically-altered “only” one to floor Hammer, making her an even more dangerous yet appealing opponent. Reis continues to improve and impress, taking ownership of two more titles in 2016 – the WBC and UBF championships, while raising her rankings to #2.
BUT… Will Petko’s Boxpromotion pony up the necessary funds and purse value to make this prospective #1 vs. #2 in the World #Box4Respect Matchup? That has already seemed to be a snag in the arrangements.
While Reis has advised #WomenofBoxing that it is her desire to defend her WBC title at home, the US market make not make that much of a viable possibility.
In a higher value market (Europe) and with Petko’s television deal with SKY Germany, this #1 vs. #2 and WBC vs. WBO unification “Rematch” should be priced respectfully.
Whether it happens now or later, November 5th or in 2017, the purse value requires modifying.
