It is publicly known that WBC and IBF Super Middleweight Champion Claressa Shields has struggled securing her next challenger/victim for dates in March, April, and now apparently May.
There are statements out of Shields’ camp that Kali Reis, Raquel Miller, and Alicia Napoleon have been among those that have declined the championship opportunity.
What is the hangup? We can all speculate, but no one may confirm.
BUT… We may now have progress towards a championship matchup!
Reports are coming out of Costa Rica and their WBA and WBO Super Welterweight Champion, Hanna Gabriels (18-1-1, 11 KOs), that she is scheduling a trip north to make her US debut on June 22nd against Shields for the vacant WBA and IBF Middleweight Title belts.
Salita Promotions has not yet made an official announcement on the matchup and details (including location – Detroit, MI or Verona, NY), so expect that very soon.
Gabriels is a heavy puncher, but has not fought higher than 154 lb since her professional debut in 2007. She has spent her entire career in the Welterweight and Super Welterweight divisions, collecting the WBO Welterweight Championship before her current Super Welterweight Championship collection.
Shields appears to be moving down in weight earlier than her matchup with Christina Hammer, as the next matchup is setup.
Shields has flat out dominated her first 5 pro bouts with wins over Franchon Crews-Dezurn, Szilvia Szabados, Sydney LeBlanc, Nikki Adler, and Tori Nelson in just about a year and a half.
This matchup contains a lot of intrigue.
