With the bad blood between former Olympic medalist and WBO NABO Flyweight Champion Marlen Esparza (7-1, 1 KO) of Houston, Texas and East LA, California’s WBC Sliver Light Flyweight Champion Seniesa Estrada. Golden Boy Promotions set their promotionally signed boxer up to settle their differences in MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas in a very rarely scheduled 3-Minute round bout.
In a slugfest that was so close to judge, both unbeaten warriors were driven to make their statement and lift that gold Interim WBA Flyweight Championship belt.
A 5th Round accidental clash of heads lead to a large and deep cut to Esparza’s forehead. Her corner contained the bleeding to allow her to continue to throw bombs.
Numerous clashes of heads restarted the stream of blood down Esparza’s face but she persevered as long as she could. It was stopped after the 9th Round to send it to the scorecards as a Technical Decision.
I would not have wanted to officially score this back and forth battle.
Official Scores: 90-81, 89-82, 88-83 all for Estrada
Esparza insists that Estrada did not significant damage other than with the head.
Estrada stated that her intentions were to go back down in weight to her natural Light Flyweight division and grab a world championship.
Golden Boy has an internal battle that is was not settled tonight.
