On Saturday evening at the O2 Arena in London, Ireland’s WBA and IBF Lightweight Champion Katie Taylor (10-0, 5 KOs) successfully defended her belts against American Kimberly Connor (13-4-2, 5 KOs).
Connors could not keep up the pace set forth by the champion, with her fast and crushing hands.
Taylor rattled and wobbled Connor in the 3rd with a sharp cross and went right back in for the knockout, throwing a barrage of body rocking punches. Connors escaped out to her left, only to be stalked for more punishment before the referee saw enough and put an end to the match.
Official time of the stoppage: 1:41 of the 3rd Round
Looking ahead…
Matchroom, obviously, did not much confidence in their July 28 opponent that they went ahead and matched their champion with the current WBO Featherweight Champion, Cindy Serrano (27-5-3, 10 KOs) who is riding a 13 match unbeaten streak, on October 20th show at the TD Garden in Boston. This matchup was originally being planned for October 6th at Wintrust Arena in Chicago, but was pushed back 2 weeks.
In just over a year and a half, Taylor has accomplished a ton, acquired the WBA and IBF Lightweight Championships with the WBC and WBO titles in her sights. Team Taylor and her promoter have been outspoken on their mission… to collect #allthebelts in the Lightweight division.
With the champion status and prestige, comes critics as some have claimed Taylor is running from potential opponents.
Being one of the brightest athletes to rejuvenate the sport as well as one of the seeming to be unstoppable forces in the game today, Taylor has stayed true to her designated weight and focuses on being the top Lightweight athlete versus chasing champions and dollars.
