From WBC:

“Yemi’s” hurrah!

With all her heart and soul, Yamileth “Yeimi” Mercado (15-2-0, 4 ko’s) made history by becoming the first Chihuahuan woman to win a world championship, by defeating Kenyan Fatuma Zarika (32- 13-2, 17 ko’s) by unanimous decision, lifting aloft the World Boxing Council female super bantamweight belt at the Poliforo of Ciudad Cuauhtémoc, Chihuahua.

“Yeimi” with her non stop work rate, impressed the Judges’ whose scorecards scorecards read: 99-91, 98-92 and 98-92.

The fighter from Ciudad Cuauhtémoc, left no room for doubt hammering out an intelligent, aggressive fight, against a lethargic, listless opponent who fought in spasmodic spurts.

“I worked a lot on the straight punches, which I had not previously done. We wanted them to be more accurate, managing to maintain control at a more prudent distance, which allowed us to keep up with the fight,” Yeimi said.

“I am very excited, because being a world champion is something. I had dreamed of since I was very young. I always said that I was going to have my first world championship fight aged 20 and I did so. Now a year later I have consolidated as a champion, the youngest in my division.”
