From WBC:
“The Kid” dethrones “La Joya”
Quintana Roo can do Yesenia “Niña” Gómez won the World Boxing Council light flyweight championship defeating Mexico City’s Esmeralda “La Joya” Moreno, at the Oasis Arena in Cancun.
Deja vu as they fought to a draw in April.
Esmeralda was the pursuer and aggressor for most of the bout with the taller Yesenia milling on the retreat using her longer reach to counter.
The battle became more intense in the fourth with fierce two handed exchanges. Even better in round five with both standing their ground toe to toe and both connecting. Esmeralda trying to find openings with hooks and Yesenia firing long straight punches, following the fisticuff firestorm bursts.
In the seventh Esmeralda went to both head and body, but was also getting tagged with accurate punches. Then a furious exchange conducted on a postage stamp, brought the crowd to its feet. The ninth was a veritable slugfest with both launching huge attacks. Willpower crackled in the night air. After the final bell both embraced in the marvelous sporting tradition of Women`s Boxing and Esmeralda went over to the opposing corner to greet the seconds.
The Judges determined 95-95, 96-94 and 97-93 in favor of Yesenia Gomez. A delight for Cancun Boxing Promoter Pepe Gomez.
